The guy in this story made two big mistakes/guardrail breaches:
1) He complimented her. Never a great plan. (Guardrail #5 - Compliment with Caution)

This guy probably had no idea what he had done. But the moment he complimented her, and then followed that up by framing his own wife negatively to her, he opened up the question and possibility of a connection with him in her mind and heart.
